Summer 2018 Mentee Opportunities


QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program.
Who Should Apply: High achieving juniors. Applicants should have mostly A's in the most challenging courses available (usually including Honors, AP, and/or IB level courses.), be in the top 5-10% of their graduating class, have the following standardized test scores PSAT or SAT scores > 1270, ACT composite score > 26, and evidence of strong writing ability, intellectual spark, and determination through essays and teacher/counselor recommendations. Review is holistic, however, so these are not strict cutoffs.Students must be low income. See HERE for who should apply.
Application Deadline: March 22, 2017
Dates: QuestBridge National College Admissions Conferences are full-day, invitation-only events for select College Prep Scholars, and take place at a few of their college partners. In 2017, they are at: Pomona College on Saturday, May 20, Yale University on Sunday, June 11 and Emory University on Saturday, June 24. If a mentee is invited to one of these conferences, the Patriot Pairs Program will pay for air fare to and from the conference.

All College Prep Scholars receive: (1) An invitation to a QuestBridge National College Admissions Conference, where they will learn from admissions officers at top colleges, (2) The distinction of being a College Prep Scholar. University of Denver Pioneer Prep Leadership Institute.
Who Should Apply: Current freshman and sophomore African American and Latino students with A's and B's
Application Deadline: May 15, 2017
Dates: June 28 - June 30, 2017 for Latino students. July 12 - July 14, 2017 for African-American students.

Cost/Scholarships: The total cost of the program is $60, with scholarship consideration for families who demonstrate financial hardship through free or reduced lunch. For any Patriot Pairs mentee who is admitted and applies for a scholarship but does not receive one, we we will pay the cost.
Description: DU is hosting a summer Pioneer Prep program for African American and Latino students. This is a dynamic three-day and two-night college experience on the University of Denver campus for rising sophomores and juniors. Participants will engage in high-quality workshops, gain leadership skills, develop a better understanding of the college application process, explore their own racial or ethnic identity, connect with key DU administrators & students, and become a member of DU's Pioneer Prep family that supports higher education goals. This is a competitive program to get accepted to. DU offers great scholarships for high achieving minority students, and this is a great opportunity for your mentee get on DU's radar screen.  According to DU, students who participate in Pioneer Prep have very high success rates at DU. The Pioneer Prep Institute designed for Latino/a students .will be held June 28 - June 30, 2017. The Black and African American student Pioneer Prep Institute will be held July 12 - July 14, 2017. Benefits provided to Pioneer Prep participants include (1) $65 Application Fee Waiver when applying to DU for college, (2) if admitted, and depending on financial need, Pioneer Prep participants will receive a Pathways Scholarship worth up to $7500 a year, renewable for four years at DU, (3) dynamic on-campus experience promoting college access, leadership and cultural identity, (4) quarterly activities on campus to reconnect with DU staff and other Pioneer Prep students, and (5) an opportunity to build one's resume and social circle of influence.  For more information and to apply, click HERE.

Description: Encourage your mentee to apply for Circle's (Connecting Inclusive, Responsive Communities Leading Education) Social Justice & Equity Leadership Experience (STAMP Camp) for high school students. The purpose of this program is to develop student leaders who are engaged in culturally responsive dialogue, through experiential opportunities to promote leadership, social justice and equity in their communities. Last summer four of our mentees received full scholarships to this one week social justice leadership camp and had wonderful experiences. Junior Achievement Business Week Summer Camp.

Description: Encourage your mentee to apply to the this business camp at Johnson and Wales University in Denver. This is a unique business camp which allows high school students to explore leadership concepts and build confidence alongside more than 120 of Denver’s most dynamic and accomplished business leaders. In addition to interactive workshops on marketing, business ethics and budgeting, the week culminates in a competition rivaled only by “Shark Tank.” Mircia Chavira and Liscenia Jiminez attended this camp last year and loved it! The camp will be from June 11 to 16, 2017. Scholarships are available. Scholarship applications are due April 9, 2017. Women’s Foundation Leadership Council.

Description: If your mentee is a young female sophomore who you believe has leadership ability, please encourage her to apply to be on the Women's Foundation of Colorado's Girls Leadership Council (GLC).  The GLC gives 20 rising juniors in the state of Colorado the unique opportunity to become community leaders and philanthropists each summer. Over six days in the summer, the GLC will conduct site visits with nonprofits, meet local legends and leaders, build meaningful relationships, and go through an entire grantmaking process. Participants leave the program empowered and equipped to address and impact their own schools and communities. Inspiring Girls Expeditions Glaciology and Marine Program

Description:​ Glaciology and Marine Programin in Alaska this Summer. Is your mentee interested in marine biology or glaciers?  Click HERE for information about a cool free summer program in Alaska for female DPS students. For girls ages 16 and 17.
  • Girls on Ice Alaska: Girls ages 16 to 17 sleep under the midnight sun and explore an Alaska glacier from June 16–27, 2017. Girls from Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Yukon or California are eligible to apply.
  • Girls on Ice Cascades: Girls ages 16 to 17 explore Mount Baker, an ice-covered volcano in Washington, from July 16–27, 2017. Girls from all states and countries may apply.
  • Girls in Icy Fjords: Girls ages 16 to 17 explore Bear Glacier and its marine environment near Seward, Alaska, while also learning to kayak. Girls in Icy Fjords is new this year and will run from August 11-22, 2017. Girls from all states and countries may apply.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science Paid Science Scholar Internship.

Description:​ This program is for current sophomores and juniors  who are underrepresented in the sciences, first generation college bound,Hispanic/Latino, African American and Native American. These are our students!  Students will be paid to work alongside scientists from the Research and Collections Team at the Museum. They will be involved with various aspects of their mentors' research and/or collections programs, presenting an overview of their work at an annual symposium held at the Museum at the end of the summer. Students who have completed this internship have gone on to study science at such universities as MIT, Duke, and University of Denver. Application deadline: Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Colorado College Pre-College Block.
Who Should Apply: Academically excellent current sophomores and juniors. Students who earn all A's and B's and who tale some Honors, PB, IB and AP classes.
Application Deadline: To apply for a scholarship, you will need to submit a 500 word essay on "The Importance of a Liberal Arts Education in Today's Society" and a copy of the second page of your parents' 2015 Tax return. Students should submit essay, tax information, and all application materials by March 31, 2017. Students will be notified of their award on April 14, 2017.

Description:​ This program is for high achieving current sophomores and juniors. In addition to taking a course for college credit, students participate in robust co-curricular programming designed to support their holistic growth, such as hikes in the Rocky Mountains, outdoor yoga classes, community service opportunities, arts, and performance. They will also participate in special information sessions with Colorado College's Office of Admission, get tips on college application writing and interviews, and rising seniors can choose to interview with the admission office.

Generation Teach.
Who Should Apply: Current sophomores, juniors and seniors who would like to explore the career of teaching.

Description:​ This is a full time all summer teaching fellowship. Generation Teach launched in 2014 in partnership with Denver Public Schools. In 2015, they grew in Denver and opened in Boston. Generation Teach believes that summer teaching fellowships develop commitment to careers in education. Many fellows teach multiple summers, deepening their experience. They begin teacher preparation as early as high school and differentiate training as fellows grow.The summer teaching fellowship will introduce fellows to the complex and intellectually demanding work of teaching and challenge fellows as learners and leaders. Fellows will complete two weeks of full-time training, where they will create a community with their colleagues, deepen their understanding of themselves, develop lifelong strategies for building relationships with colleagues and students, learn core instructional strategies, and practice key teaching skills. They will work closely with a professional teacher and their department to prepare to create their classroom community and lead their students to a deeper understanding of and passion for content. Their coach will observe their teaching every single day of the Summer Academy, and will meet with fellows individually or collectively each day for feedback and support. Generation Teach provides all alumni with letters of recommendation, monthly alumni newsletters, Facebook communities, and ongoing support, as requested.

Colorado State Patrol Youth Academy.
Who Should Apply: Current sophomores, juniors who will be at least  sixteen (16) Years of Age by June 11, 2017 ppland who have a minimum GPA of at least 2.0. Applicants must posses a valid Colorado Driver's License, have Doctor Certification of Ability to Participate, and agree to a Criminal and Driver History Check.

Description:​ The goal of the CSP Youth Academy is to assist in the development of future leaders for the state of Colorado. Focus will be on leadership development through team exercises and individual achievement. Cadets will become familiar with the basic elements of the CSP Academy through a demanding daily training schedule. The CSP Youth Academy will be mentally and physically demanding, and will challenge all participants. The Academy is limited to forty participants selected throughout the state. Training includes (1) Ethics and Law Enforcement, (2) Introduction to Law Enforcement Driving, (3) Firearm Safety and Familiarization, (4) Police Communications Procedures and (5) History and Philosophy of the CSP.
